For thousands of years, gold and silver coins have represented units of monetary wealth, to be used in open trade and commerce, or as a store of wealth. Investors and collectors worldwide value and even treasure these coins because they could act as a hedge against inflation, which is traditionally prompted by the over-issuance of paper currency.

They have also been a long-standing means of preserving and protecting hard earned wealth. No other modern or ancient asset has maintained the record of solidity and stability that precious metal coinages offer to their owners.

The price of gold and silver coins is dependent upon certain factors such as weight, rarity, and the number of coins originally minted, which are generally referred to as the coins’ population. There are two types of gold and silver coinages, with each type having its’ own individual basis for market trade value; modern bullion coins and certified rare coins.

Modern bullion coin prices are based on daily market spot prices, as well as each coin’s respective governments’ issuance on the coin’s premiums. Certified rare coin prices are based on frequently updated, daily market spot prices, as well as each coin’s corresponding mint state certification. Each corresponding certification is based on determining factors, such as the particular coin’s overall physical condition, and scarcity.

Modern bullion is traditionally used for short-term investments, where an investor usually holds his or her investment between one and fourteen months, and is focusing on profit.

Conversely, certified rare coins are widely considered to be ideal long-term investments, due to their numismatic value, which generally appreciates over time.

Investors also enjoy the added security of owning a certified rare coin investment, as they are deemed by government decree to be non-confiscatable.
